Kyng – Breathe the Water – Album Review
Blasting out of California, Kyng brings to us Breath in the Water. The album is quite simply rock and roll without bells and whistles. This is straightforward, in-your-face rock and roll fired up by vocalist/guitarist Eddie Veliz, bassist Tony Castaneda, and drummer Pepe Clark.
This is my first dose of Kyng, so I listened to them with fresh ears. I liked it. Breathe in the Water displayed many musical styles so it is hard to put them into one style of rock and roll. The first track off of the Kyng album is “Pristine Warning” which comes out of the gate and smashes you in the face. Heavy riffage abounds. The title track is not quite as heavy, but still has weight to it.
There are hints of Alter Bridge, in “Closer to the Edge.” Eddie Veliz has strong vocals throughout the album and he can pull off a ballad as well with “Show Me Your Love.”
What do I like most? Weighty riffs, double guitar solos, and strong percussion. Breathe in the Water by Kyng is a solid performer that showed me as much heaviness with just enough light to make it interesting. Not every song is a winner, and at times, the Kyng album feels like songs were thrown in at the end as filler for what is an otherwise good listen.
Would I go see Kyng live? Hell yes. This band has toured with the likes of Zakk Wylde and Clutch. If you like guitar riff filled music then this is a good choice for you. I have listened to Breath in the Water 3 times and I like it and now have it to play in my car while I am driving. I think they should tour and get some more exposure because they warrant more attention.
I would give Breathe in the Water by Kyng a 8/10 for this album.
